dr Z Halat, medical epidemiology consultant, noxologist: We are all neighbours in our global village. Respectful distance between neighbours is the recipe for harmonious relationships. An American philosopher and logician Willard Van Orman Quine once said: no entity without identity. From the history of my nation and my own professional experience I dare to add: identity integrity determines survival. The genuine respect for moral, psychological, and physical integrity of each human person is a prerequisite for the fair integration of humanity. |

The hymen
The hymen is a membrane covering the vagina as part of the normal female body. Typically, the hymen has an opening or openings necessary for the regular functioning of the organism. The importance of hymen hygiene training is to teach children how they can prevent damaging this body part by themselves, by other children or by paedophiles. In this stage of human development, the ‘no dirty touch’ rule should be applied.
This becomes more complicated when the child discovers masturbation by herself or is induced to by other children or pervert adults. Particularly when pubertal hormonal changes cause the hymen not painful to touch, experimenting with strong sexual urges may easily end with unrenewable damage to the hymen done with finger(s), object(s), and penis(es).
Although only the last tool of breaking the hymen results in defloration and finally takes virginity forever, in many instances the insertion(s) of the penis(es) leaves no physical evidence due to elasticity of the hymen. The thickened and elastic hymen reflects influence of estrogens on adolescent body.
The psychological characteristics of adolescent mind are also exceptional: infatuated and easily seduced or just strongly influenced by peer and/or media pressure immature virgins lose their virginity in a casual fling, boozed / drugged up, for nothing, in circumstances not only unsanctioned but plainly disgusting.
In this stage of human development, the young must not be discouraged from non-penetrative sexual activities. Compared to vaginal, anal and oral penetration, any form of solo, or parallel or mutual masturbation seems to be a reasonable choice for those who are not capable to control their sexuality.
The hygiene of the hymen requires stopping any digital or instrumental stimulating enough far from the vaginal vestibule to make sure that the hymen is safeguarded. Both genders must realize that stimulation of the clitoris can result in a female orgasm which is by no means inferior to the vaginal one.
The visible, covered, and hidden virginity related female organs. visible clitoral hood (latin: preputium clitoridis) covering clitoral glans - hidden in the mons pubis clitoral body – hidden by the lip (latin labium, plural: labia) clitoral leg (crus, plural: crura) – hidden by the lip clitoral vestibular bulb and greater vestibular gland (Bartholin's gland) – visible outer lip (latin: labium maius, plural: labia maiora) and inner lip (latin: labium minus, plural: labia minora) covering halat hymen and urinary opening (latin: meatus urethrae)
In the vast majority of those adolescents who hardly can control their sexuality, condemning masturbation leads to premature sexual intercourses, and consecutively to promiscuity, sexually transmitted infections, unwanted pregnancies, abortions, ruined family lives, divorces and children victimization.
Parents and carers of an immature female virgin as well as a mature virgin herself must be aware of avoidable risks to hymen wholeness in medical settings. A strong position while demanding unconditional respect for the female virgin patient’s integrity can save her hymen even in a setting staffed by a personnel openly hostile to virginity. Non-ethical, openly criminal attitudes towards virgin patients occur even among midwives and endanger newborn babies, and among gynaecologists who insist on breaking their patients’ hymens under false pretences.
Certifying presence of intact hymen before the female virgin is put at the risk of being robbed of her virginity can save her hymen, general health and even life in such places like hospital wards (mainly psychiatric but not only), boarding schools, correctional institutions, prisons, military units, and all other similar ones where coercion not uncommonly ends with rape.
For many men worldwide the fiancée’s and bride’s virginity is precondition for engagement followed by marriage. The fiancée who lost her virginity before, sadly realizes that she cannot offer it to her future husband and looks for a handy solution. Unfortunately, that is nothing but fraud. Honesty must be mutual – if either partner in the relationship is dishonest with the other, the relationship will be worthless.

All women are born with a hymen. A congenital absence of hymen exceptionally occurs, however is extremely rare as a part of severe genital malformations: Q52.0 Congenital absence of vagina Q52.7 Congenital absence of vulva

There are many different types of hymens.
Typical tornable / stretchable hymens can be torn with finger(s), object(s), and penis(es) and if torn they remain torn and present notches / clefts or they heal with scars hardly detectable without specialist testing techniques.
Typical tornable / stretchable hymen
Two types of hymens that stand at opposite poles as regards their value in professional virginity testing are described below.
Typical elastic hymen can be stretched with fingers(s), object(s), and penis(es) and regains its original shape sooner or later after. Stretching the elastic hymen with a finger or an object does not end virginity. Stretching the elastic hymen with a penis ends virginity. Because the elastic hymen regains it shape sooner or later after stretching(s) the regular medical examination results are inconclusive, some specialist testing techniques are available though.
Typical elastic hymen
Fraud-proof hymen - halat hymen has sieve openings or a partitioned opening, and if found on medical examination is an indisputable proof of virginity. Like any other type of hymen the halat hymen can be torn with a finger, object, and penis. Tearing the halat hymen with a penis ends virginity. Tearing the halat hymen with a finger or an object does not end virginity but deprives the virgin of her indisputable proof of virginity.
Fraud-proof hymen - halat hymen
The imperforate, cribriform, and septate hymens frequencies of occurrence differ considerably due to variety of interrelated genetic and environmental factors influencing the reproductive system development. The global average estimated from scarce medical evidence could range from 3 % to 4 %. In some populations the imperforate hymen can be diagnosed in 0.1 % of newborns and requires a small surgical intervention as soon as possible after birth to enable undisturbed development of the genital tract and save the girl from unnecessary suffering and embarrassment in case the surgery would be postponed until she develops signs and symptoms of hematocolpos during puberty. If the surgery is properly done and well documented, the patient reaching her marriageable age enjoys the same opportunities of offering her husband a fraud-free hymen as other halat hymen gifted women do.

The hymen cannot be torn through participation in sports (e.g. straddle injuries) such as gymnastics, horse riding, bicycle riding etc.
The hymen and tampon-related injuries
If available, tampons are the most common cause of nonsexual hymen injuries.
In typical tornable / stretchable hymens regular tampons inserting and removing (at least 3 changes per each of 3 – 6 days of menstruation every month) leave behind the hymen more and more lacerated and stretched.
In fraud-proof hymen - halat hymen (which has sieve openings or a partitioned opening) the first tampon inserting breaks the hymen and damages its fine structure with severe bleeding occasionally, and the tampon removing can be difficult or just not possible without a skilful assistance when the ‘tampon stuck’ emergency occurs.

Wreath – a primaeval depiction of female virginity
Wreath is a symbolic replica of the thickened, sleeve-like, redundant, fimbriated hymen and as such has been used for millennia to symbolize virginity in Slavic peoples, including indigenous inhabitants of the territory of Europe's oldest civilization (5,000 BC), eastward from the later German-Slavic boundary named by the Germans in the 9th century AD 'Limes Sorabicus' (West Slavic Frontier) between the North and Adriatic Sea.
