Journal of the American Medical Association JAMA of 1938, July 23; Vol. 111 (4), page 342 BARTHOLINITIS To the Editor:—What is the incidence of bartholinitis in virgins, or is it always a result of sexual contamination? M.D. Calfornia. Answer.—Bartholinitis nearly always occurs in women who have had sexual intercourse. It is rare to observe this condition in a virgin but it is conceivable that it may occur in young girls afflicted with gonorrheal vulvovaginitis. The duct of Bartholin's gland is about 0.5 mm. in diameter and any irritation, such as a gonorrheal infection, diphtheritic involvement or other condition which produces a vaginitis and vulvitis, might bring about an agglutination of the walls of the duct, thereby preventing the escape of the gland contents. If the infection is virulent, an abscess will result. Bartholin cysts and abscesses may occur in the absence of a gonorrheal infection. Cysts particularly may result if scar tissue from childbirth injuries should obstruct the duct of the gland.

A common pattern of
female sexual self-stimulation: target organs
1. Clitoral glans directly, by rubbing
 and pressing against the pubic bone
2. Labia directly, by rubbing
and clitoral bulbs indirectly, by pressing the labia
3. Optional: insensitive vaginal wall directly, by rubbing
as a ritual reminescence of penetration in ex-virgins,
and clitoral bulbs indirectly, by pressing the vaginal vestibule
4. Clitoral shaft indirectly, by pressing pubic mound
and pressing against the pubic bone (climax)

Given sufficient stimulation by direct and/or indirect pressure applied solely to her clitoris, almost every female can become sexually aroused quickly and will typically end in an orgasm, in more instances than expected, accompanied with the expulsion of noticeable amounts of clear fluid from the Skene's glands in a function named a female emmission or female ejaculation, commonly known as gushing, cumming or squirting. No penetration is needed to get a great orgasm. In fact, penetration without sufficient clitoral stimulation hardly ends in any orgasm.
